[Extract of a letter from Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles written at Bencoolen, Sumatra, addressed to William Taylor Money], 1820 April. ca. 1820.

Raffles describes his activities in Sumatra and offers his congratulations on his correspondent's election as a Director of the East India Company. He also further confirms some lingering unfavourable first impressions expressed in numerous letters to friends and acquaintances. "No place could have been worse chosen for a settlement than Bencoolen and it never can become of much importance - but I am nevertheless doing what I can for it."

These inclinations contributed to Lansdowne's support for Raffles' efforts to increase British influence in South East Asia.
